Newsletter 23: August 2014

Editor: Doug Chapman

From our Chairman

Alan Partridge

This will be the last newsletter piece that I shall contribute as Chairman (thank goodness, I hear you cry). As I come to the end of my term, I must thank the committee for all their support over the past three years, with special reference to "Councillor Mary Cooke", Doug Chapman, Michael Austin, and Richard English. Without them we would not exist.

Thank you all

I must also thank Colin Brain, and Alex McLeman for their work on the events, especially the "Ironbridge" trip which I thought was very successful as we had time to socialise both in the hotel and at the various museums and exhibitions. Thank you both. It is a pity that the numbers did not match previous events but what we lost in quantity we gained in quality.

We were unable to hold a committee meeting at Ironbridge because members were away and some were even working

so there will be a heavier case load at the Committee meeting in September, when we will be nominating a replacement chairman (nominations on a postcard please to Mary).

There is a rumour that a Spring event for 2015 is likely to be a visit to "Prague" and to me, selfishly, bring it on.

I look forward to meeting you all once again in London and in the meantime - Good Luck, Good Health, and Safe travelling.

Spring Visit to Ironbridge

Seventeen people explored the intriguing attractions of Ironbridge during the two night visit in May. Some rather wet weather was a minor inconvenience in the company of friends!

People Place

We were saddened to hear of the death in February of Bella Rangel-Callan. We also pass on our sympathy to George Powell at the loss earlier this year of his wife, Joyce, who enriched many Old Abtarian occasions with her cheerful presence.

Dates for your Diary

The AGM will be held at Porters Restaurant in Covent Garden on Tuesday, 30th  September. The Members Lunch will follow as usual, before a group goes to St Pancras to catch the 18 04 Eurostar to Brussels for a two night visit ably organised by Colin and Alex.

The Annual Christmas Lunch will be at the Four Pillars Hotel, Oxford, on Tuesday 9th December.

Full details of the AGM and Christmas Lunch will be circulated closer to the events.
